Madagascar is a place that gets under your skin. It’s wild, beautiful, and completely unique—but it’s also not the easiest place to travel. If you’ve done some research, you’ll have realised that it’s not an easy backpacking destination. Transport is unpredictable, roads can be challenging, and knowing where to go beyond the usual tourist spots isn’t always straightforward. French may be the formal language but outside of the capital and tourist hubs of the north, few speak anything other than Malagasy (think Welsh crossed with Indonesian!). Want to experience what lies behind the glossy brochures of pristine beaches and experience the authentic Madagascar? When I travelled through South America and Indonesia as a backpacker Lonely Planet and Brandt guides were my go to. Head to the travel shelves at your local book store and you will find travel guides for Madagascar but they are woefully out of date with few destinations being visited since Covid closed the island for two years. Outside of the big chains hotels are difficult to contact and payment mechanisms hard to navigate. Yes you can book a driver and a car reasonably easily but being confident that you can communicate sufficiently to ensure you get the experience you want is more difficult. Wanting to see lemurs can mean you end up in an unethical petting zoo instead of the harder to locate community conservation project.
That’s where we come in.
Booking a Miremby tour means we can be the interface between your dream trip and reality, handling logistics, uncovering tried and tested experiences. Every journey we create is personal, immersive, and designed to connect you with the people, landscapes, and wildlife of Madagascar in a way that few travellers get to experience. And let’s get real this doesn’t come without a price tag. Miremby is committed to ensuring local guides and drivers get a fair wage and are treated ethically (things as basic as ensuring they don’t have to sleep in their car outside your eco lodge to keep the price down for your dream trip). And of course we need to make a living too. Yes we’ll plan you a bespoke trip based on our experience and the relationships we have worked hard to develop, but if community led tourism is going to make a difference companies like ours need to be sustainable and that means making enough profit to survive. If you compare our prices to those of trips you can click to book online then we are more expensive but you are paying for an authentic ethical experience where you are giving back as much as you take.
A Tour Company Built from the Inside Out
Miremby isn’t just another tour operator—it’s built on real connections, deep local knowledge, and years of experience in conservation and community-led tourism. And at the heart of it all are Tsiraiky and me.
Tsiraiky: The Man Who Knows Everyone and Everything About Madagascar
If there’s one thing you need to know about Tsiraiky, it’s that he’s connected and knows everything about Madagascar’s wildlife.
Born and raised in a small village in Madagascar, he’s spent his life forging relationships across the country. He’s been a tour guide for over a decade, and wherever we go, he knows someone—a fisherman in Sainte Luce, a jeweller in Fort Dauphin, a family in the highlands who will welcome you like an old friend.
But his expertise doesn’t stop at local connections—he is an expert in Madagascar’s biodiversity. Whether it’s spotting a rare chameleon in the forest or identifying the calls of endemic birds, Tsiraiky knows the island’s creatures inside and out. He can spot amazing wildlife and explain their behaviour, ecology, and place in Madagascar’s unique ecosystems, making your wildlife encounters unforgettable.
His deep-rooted connections mean that when you travel with Miremby, you get access to experiences you won’t find in any guidebook. It’s not just about seeing Madagascar; it’s about truly experiencing it. And when Tsiraiky isn’t available, we will pair you with a guide who fits your dream trip by securing an alternative guide for you from our ten years of connections with other excellent guides who share our values and will deliver incredible experiences.
Me (Bethany): A Conservationist’s Approach to Travel
Before starting Miremby, I spent years working in wildlife conservation, primatology, and community-led projects, researching how people and wildlife can thrive together. My work has taken me to the remote parts of the Amazon in the Manu Biosphere Reserve to study butterflies and primates and in Madagascar to study lemurs. I’ve collaborated with local communities to create conservation initiatives that are both sustainable and empowering.
This experience shapes every tour we create. We don’t just pass through communities—we work with them, learn from them, and ensure that tourism benefits them directly.
My meticulous planning ensures that each itinerary is not just a checklist of sights but a meaningful adventure. Whether its spotting lemurs in Andasibe, trekking through the spiny forest, or learning traditional weaving techniques in Sainte Luce, you’re not just observing - you are engaging, learning and supporting local people in a way that is truly authentic.
🔎Want to see wildlife? We do it in a way that genuinely supports conservation efforts.
